EU Grants Jordan €80 Million to Support Hosting of Syrian Refugees

The European Commission announced on Tuesday the approval of a €80 million financial support package for the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, aimed at assisting its efforts to host hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees residing in the country.

In a statement, the Commission said the new funding will be used to support UNHCR programs in Jordan, by strengthening essential services provided to refugees — including education, healthcare, food assistance, and social support.

According to the statement, the aid aims to help Jordan continue its efforts to meet the needs of refugees both in camps and within host communities across the various governorates.

Jordan currently hosts more than 436,000 registered Syrian refugees with the UNHCR, who make up the majority of the nearly 474,000 refugees and asylum seekers living in the country.

Jordan has been one of the main host countries for Syrian refugees since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis in 2011, relying heavily on support from international partners and donors to sustain the level of humanitarian services provided to them.
